Crossover
For my printmaking class, we had a class-wide print exchange. The theme was for each of us to create our own version of a print by Martin Lewis called "Spring Night, Greenwich Village." It's a very subtle, masterful dry point. Unfortunately, I've only ever done one dry point beforehand, and subtlety isn't one of my strong points. My initial idea was to attempt trademark suicide and replace all of the figures with advertising mascots like Ronald McDonald and the Burger King. When I sketched it out, it became apparent that the idea wasn't going to come across in the way that I'd like. As much as I wanted to have Ronald McDonald and Jack in the Box making out in a doorway, I bailed on the idea.
I counted on the fact that an impending deadline would force me to complete something, procrastinated away every possible second, and banged this out in three days. It came out decently, I'm not unhappy with it, but I'm not a huge fan of dry point as a technique. It has it's charms, but I can't see myself working in this technique very often. I haven't even unwrapped all the prints I got back in the exchange, but I am really looking forward to seeing how everyone else's prints came out.

"Crossover," 6" x 9", dry point, 2009. Edition of 20.
Oh yeah, after completing the print, I had a terrible time coming up with a title. I wandered around the school's library, and saw the classic EPMD album in the CD bins, and that was that.
