Fizzy Delight
Well, this is the last of the prints from last quarter. Pretty much every quarter, we (as a class) do a folio set, which is both awesome (because it's great to get a ton of really cool prints from people that you know and work with and like) and a complete pain in the ass (because you HAVE TO GET IT DONE, and you also have to get 20 good prints, which means that unless you want to die, you have to keep things simple on the actual printing end of the deal). This quarter, the theme was the alphabet, and we each drew a pair of letters out of a hat. Mine were "o" and "p," and it took me a good 8 weeks to come up with a decent idea, which was a sort of suggestive soda pop ad. I had a lot more things that I wanted to do that would have pushed it from "suggestive" to flat-out vulgar, but every time I started blocking them in, it took away from the composition. Darn it! The stats: "Fizzy Delight," 9" x 12", intaglio, 2009. Edition of 20, printed on Fabriano Rosapina white.

A lot of the prints that I do now incorporate color in the printing process, but as I mentioned before, it really ups your workload. I usually draw the line at around 10 prints - if I have to print more of a design than that, it gets really difficult to block out enough time (and to work around however many other people, and and to physically hold up long enough to get the work done). But almost immediately, I knew that this print needed some color, and I came up with the idea to hand-color a handful of them in famous color schemes. This one is called "Have a Pop and a Smile," is an etching hand-colored with an Inktense pencil.

One of my summer projects is to hand-color a few more. I have at least 3 more variations in mind, but that also means I need to go buy some more Inktense pencils!
