"Want," 4" x 4", woodcut, 2009.  Edition of 8.

Want

This is the other woodcut that I'd had done for about a month, but couldn't seem to find the time to print it until last week.  This print was made from two separate woodblocks that were exactly the same size, and each one was printed in a different color.  That way I got three tones instead of two in the print.  The place that I order my woodblocks from, McClain's, has a great deal where you can buy a bag of scrap Shina blocks.  They're all smallish and some are oddly sized, but they're a great (and inexpensive) way to quickly experiment with woodcuts and multiple color blocks.  Also, since the images are on the smaller side, it's nice to be able to play around without any pressure.  If they work, they work.  If not, oh well...

The very first woodcut that I did was 18" x 24", and it's proven extremely difficult to print.  Last week I finally got a couple of decent prints from it, and those are both destined for hand-colored land.  I had to mask out areas on the block after inking it up, and that makes what should be easy to print a much more complicated and time-consuming process.  I'm not certain I'll ever get a true edition out of it (if I do it may be five or less prints), but getting a couple of prints that are good enough to later hand-color is a huge step forward.
